World Wide Web Consortium - W3C creates standards/recommendations with the goal to lead the Web to achieve its full potential. At the same time, it develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software and tools) and creates an informative forum for collective understanding. W3C is hosted within three organizations, in three continents: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in United States, European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) in Europe and Keio University in Japan.
Since its establishment in 1998, W3C Office in Greece - located at Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) in Iraklion Crete, - is the national contact point of W3C and is authorized by the Consortium for enrolling new Members, as well as for informing organizations that involve cutting edge technologies about Web specifications' evolvement.
W3C Office in Greece promotes Web technologies in Greek language, along with the Greek participation in W3C activities and events about key-technologies such as Semantic Web and Web Accessibility Initiative - WAI.
Through its website (www.w3c.gr) - regarding W3C actions in Greece, - the Greek Office provides general information for the Consortium and for its Greek Office (e.g. conferences, workshops) as well as translations of W3C News, Press Releases, and Technical Reports. Based on this information, W3C Office in Greece creates and distributes a monthly Newsletter. Furthermore, W3C Office in Greece participates in conferences, organizes informative events and participates in research and development projects, funded by the European Commission.
Finally, W3C Office in Greece informs the public about technology evolvement issues regarding Web while it maintains a network of contacts with organizations that involve Web technologies (Research Institutes, Technology Parks, telecommunications and cutting-edge technology companies) in Greece.
